If you thought I was going to tell you to pick Enfamil over Similac, sorry about that.   Choosing the right brand and formulation depends on your baby and his or her unique needs.  If your baby is having issues, or you have concerns you should consult your pediatrician.  Otherwise, you can probably choose from one of the standard formula.

Whatever the formula you chose, you might want to consider its packaging.  According the folks at Environmental Working Group (ewg.org/babysafe)  powdered formula cans have the least BPA of any other packages.  According to the group, the ready to feed has the highest levels of BPA in the packaging.  They strongly recommend going with powdered formula.

You are probably going to here people that iron fortified formula will give your baby gas or  constipation.  Or, if your baby has constipation, friends may recommend switching to a low-iron formula.  In actuality, constipation and gas are rarely the result of iron in the formula.

The basis for most people's belief that iron formula causes constipation is based on the fact that when adults supplement with iron, constipation is a common side effect.  However, a study done concerning the formula question in babies was performed and the rate of constipation for babies taking the low-iron formula and the iron fortified formula was the same.

Soy infant formula has grown in popularity over the last few years and some estimates place soy formula as 20% - 25% of formula sales in the United States. However, is it right for your baby?

Many people, including doctors, believe that using a soy based formula will help with colic.  The American Academy Pediatrics, however, says soy has no proven benefits in managing or preventing colic or the crying and fussiness associated with it.   The American Academy Pediatrics also warns against feeding premature babies soy formula. Of course, the trick is making sure you have a formula coupon when you need it. There are a couple of ways to get formula coupons and make sure you have them on hand.

Here are some tips for successfully buying baby food formula on ebay at a huge discount.

In my experience, the best savings or on purchasing baby formula, rather than coupons. For whatever reason, the competition for coupons is greater. However, I encourage you to do what your most comfortable doing.

1. Do not try and go for a home run and bid 10 cents on the dollar, your wasting your time because you will get out bid. This is a great way for parents to save money. As a consequence, you will not be the only one bidding.

   When bidding, aim for a 30% savings. So if you are currently paying $15 per can, then your highest bid should be no more than $10.50 per can. ($15 X .7 = $10.5). DO NOT FORGET TO INCLUDE SHIPPING IN YOUR FINAL COST CALCULATION.

   Here is how to do it. Determine your highest bid per can (see above). Multiply your highest bid per can by the number of cans in the auction. This number will be your target final cost. Now, subtract the cost of shipping from your target final cost, this is the maximum amount you should bid.

   So, assume 5 cans are up for bid and I normally pay $15 per can. And, assume the seller is charging 11.95 for shipping.
   
   -($15 x .7 = $10.5) my highest bid per can
   -($10.5 x 5 = $52.5) my target final cost
   -($52.5 - $11.95 = $40.55) my maximum bid

2. Enter your maximum bid, as calculated above, on your first bid. In other words, if your maximum bid is $40.55 (from the example above). You may or may not reach your maximum bid, everything under your maximum bid is just more savings for you. Remember how ebay bidding works - only the next bid necessary to win (up to your maximum bid) is entered.

3. After you have found your brand of formula and specific formulation, ebay lets you choose to see all auctions or auctions with a "buy it now" option. Before you bid, see if there are any buy it now auctions were you can save at least 30% (use test above). If so, grab it.

4. Generally shipping takes 5 days on average, so you need to win an auction so that you do not run out of formula.
